Fiber Optics Buttonbush

Fiber Optics Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Bailoptics')Fiber Optics Buttonbush is a bold native shrub that thrives in moisture and brings a strong, natural presence to the landscape. It shines in places that stay damp, along ponds, streams, and rain-garden edges, where many shrubs struggle to look happy. Through summer, it adds personality with unusual, fragrant flowers that pull in pollinators and make the planting feel alive. If you need a tough, wildlife-friendly shrub that can handle wet feet and still look polished, this is a dependable choice. Distinctive FeaturesIn summer, this selection produces round, creamy white flower clusters that look like pincushions, with long, protruding styles that give the blooms a starburst effect. The flowers are pleasantly fragrant and are followed by small, button-like seed clusters that can add texture into fall. Foliage is clean green and the shrub forms a dense, rounded habit that reads as full and substantial. As a native wetland plant, it is especially valuable for habitat plantings and shoreline stability. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best flowering and density in full sun. Soil: Moist to wet soils are ideal, and it tolerates periodic flooding when water is not stagnant for long periods. Water: Medium to high, keep consistently moist, and do not let the root zone dry out in hot weather. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Mature Size: Typically 5 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a summer-season feature where the unique round flowers can be seen up close along a path or near a seating area. Rain Gardens: A reliable shrub for moisture-collecting areas where consistent performance matters. Pond and Stream Edges: Plant along shorelines for a natural look that supports wildlife and helps stabilize banks. Wildlife Plantings: Include in habitat borders to support pollinators and add late-season seed interest for birds. Natural Screens: Mass in informal rows to create a dense green backdrop in wet spots and low areas. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to shape and refresh, removing older stems to encourage vigorous new growth. Watering: Water consistently in average garden soils, especially in full sun, because flowering and growth decline when it dries out. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch pulled back from the base of stems. Fertilizing: Usually unnecessary in decent soil, but a light spring feeding can help in very lean sites. Deer Resistance: Generally moderately deer resistant, though occasional browsing can occur when pressure is high. Why Choose Fiber Optics Buttonbush?
