Ferocactus echidne

Description Ferocactus echidne Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Ferocactus echidne is a barrel cactus native to the deserts of Mexico, where it grows among rocky, arid landscapes. It belongs to the Ferocactus genus and requires minimal care.   It displays the classic barrel shape with prominent ribs lined by fierce spines that give it a hedgehog-like appearance. The body ranges from blue-green to gray-green, contrasted by reddish to amber-colored spines. As a slow-growing specimen, it maintains a compact, upright form.   Yellow flowers crown the top of mature plants during warmer months. The plant needs a night temperature drop to encourage blooming in cultivation. Ferocactus Echidne may affect sensitive individuals with its pollen.   This cactus handles balcony wind, rain, dry heated air, and drafty indoor spots without issue. A deep root system requires a heavy pot for stability to prevent tipping. Place it away from small children due to its formidable spines.   Ferocactus echidne requires full sun with direct sunlight exposure throughout the day.   Water it deeply but infrequently every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce to monthly or less during winter dormancy.   Ferocactus Echidne grows well in well-draining cactus mix with added perlite and coarse sand.   It tolerates temperatures from 50–100°F and light frost down to 25°F.   Ferocactus Echidne is a slow-growing cactus requiring minimal fertilizer during the growing season.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and tolerates brief frosts to 25°F. It grows outdoors in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Nevada, southern Oregon, Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina's coastal regions. It also flourishes in protected microclimates throughout southern Arkansas, New Mexico, southern Utah, and the warmer valleys of Colorado. Q: How often should I water Ferocactus echidne? A: Every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce to monthly or less in winter. Q: Are the spines a safety concern? A: Ferocactus echidne has sharp spines that can cause injury, so keep it away from pets and small children on high shelves or in out-of-reach locations. Q: How much light does Ferocactus Echidne need indoors? A: It needs direct sunlight in a south or west-facing window. Rotate it regularly for even development and move it outdoors during summer if possible. Q: What's the growth rate? A: Ferocactus Echidne is slow-growing and may take years to reach maturity, making it an excellent long-term container specimen. Q: Can Ferocactus Echidne survive cold temperatures? A: It tolerates light frost down to 25°F but should be protected from prolonged freezing. Move it indoors in marginal zones during winter. Q: When does it bloom? A: Ferocactus Echidne produces yellow flowers during warm months on mature plants. Full sun and a night temperature drop encourage blooming.
