Ferocactus Stainessii v. Pilosus

Ferocactus stainesii var. pilosus Common Name: Mexican Fire Barrel Ferocactus stainesii var. pilosus, widely known as the Mexican Fire Barrel, is an impressive columnar cactus revered for its bright, fiery red spines and commanding presence. Native to the high deserts of northern and central Mexico, this species forms tall, upright columns with prominent vertical ribs wrapped in dense clusters of vibrant, hair-like spines—hence the name pilosus, meaning “hairy.” This variety grows faster than many Ferocactus species and eventually reaches heights of several feet, making it a stunning focal point in arid landscapes or large container displays. In summer, mature plants produce vivid yellow to orange blooms that rise from the crown, contrasting beautifully with the red spination. ☀ Light Requirements Loves full sun. Outdoors, give it maximum sunlight for tight growth and intense spine color. Indoors, place in your brightest window or use strong grow lights to prevent stretching. 💧 Watering Needs Water deeply only when soil is fully dry. It appreciates consistent watering during active growth (spring–fall) but must have excellent drainage. Drastically reduce watering in winter. 🌡 Temperature Tolerance Hardy to about 25–30°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost, especially if the soil is wet. For cold climates or winter orders, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack]. ✨ Special Features • Fiery Red Spines – Long, dense, hair-like spines that glow in sunlight • Fast Columnar Growth – One of the quicker-growing Ferocactus species • Desert Showstopper – Adds instant impact to any cactus garden or collection Other Common Names: Mexican Fire Barrel, Fire Spine Barrel, Red-Headed Barrel Cactus This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.
