Training your Extra-Large Dog to Walk Our no-pull secure harness is only the first step when it comes to safely walking your oversized furry friend. As big as your extra-large breed dog might be, they are still a softy! Easily spooked by a sudden noise or captivated by a passing squirrel, training is key when safely walking your large dog. Positive Reinforcement Training When training a large-breed dog, the goal is to teach your pup to work with you, not to try to be stronger than them. Large-breed dogs like Mastiffs can weigh as much as 200 pounds, easily overpowering their owners. With positive reinforcement training, your dog will learn good behavior in a fun and positive way! When your dog displays good behavior, like heeling when told, reward your pup verbally and/or with a treat. Your dog will learn which behaviors you like—those that come with praise—and will be encouraged to repeat those behaviors. How to use Positive Reinforcement Training Timing is everything when it comes to positive reinforcement training! As soon as you observe good behavior, give praise or a treat to your dog. When using treats as positive reinforcement, choose a high-reward treat only used for training. A special treat for good behaviors will result in the most encouragement for your pup!
