The Exorcist III (The Scene)

The Exorcist III — Jump Scare Tee (1990) If you know the image, you can probably still hear the sound. Released in 1990, The Exorcist III was written and directed by William Peter Blatty, adapting his novel Legion and returning to the world he created with The Exorcist. George C. Scott stars as Lieutenant Kinderman, investigating a series of increasingly bizarre murders that appear connected to a killer who should have been dead for years. But for horror fans, one sequence has become legendary. A nearly motionless camera watches a quiet hospital corridor. A nurse makes her rounds. Nothing happens. Then nothing happens some more. Blatty stretches the scene almost beyond endurance, training the audience to stare into every doorway and dark corner. And then that figure in white suddenly appears with the enormous shears. It's routinely cited as one of the greatest jump scares in horror history, precisely because it isn't built around frantic editing or an obvious musical cue. The film simply waits until you've convinced yourself you're safe—and proves otherwise. The Exorcist III was initially overshadowed by its famous predecessor, but its reputation has grown enormously. Brad Dourif's extraordinary performance, George C. Scott's weary intensity, surreal religious imagery, pitch-black humor, and Blatty's willingness to let scenes unfold slowly have turned it into a genuine cult classic.
