Deep merlot stems and leaves are such an asset to the garden, and such a conversation piece! It's a fabulous contrast plant and focal point, and its summer-blooming stems make long-lasting cut flowers. It's still exciting when the spikes are covered in marble-like burgundy seed pods. As soon as it pushes up, this is one of the most popular plants in the garden every year. The more sun, the more merlot. Drink up! Our best plants grow on the southern side of a building, with well-drained soil (they are practically in gravel), and very little supplemental summer water. Heat and sun bring out the best in them.
