Automobile Number, Esquire Magazine

This June 1955 Esquire cover transforms the American highway into high art, presenting a bird's-eye view of four cloverleaf interchanges populated by miniature automobiles in candy colors. The design captures a pivotal moment in American culture: the dawn of the Interstate era, when highway engineering represented progress and the automobile symbolized freedom. The composition is brilliantly conceived, with gray asphalt ribbons forming abstract circular patterns against a cream background. Yellow and blue circles anchor the lower interchanges, while tiny cars in red, orange, and gray traverse the roadways. A small inset map of Detroit pays homage to the Motor City, grounding this modernist abstraction in automotive reality. As Esquire's annual Automobile Number, this issue celebrated America's love affair with the car at its most passionate. The sophisticated graphic approach elevates commercial magazine design to the level of fine art, making this cover a standout piece for collectors of mid-century modernism and automotive Americana alike.
