Espolòn Extra Añejo Tequila

Espolòn Extra Añejo is the most ambitious expression ever released by the Casa San Nicolás distillery — a double-cask tequila that pushes Espolon's bold, accessible character into genuinely premium territory. Released in June 2026 and led by Maestro Tequilero Jesús Susunaga Acosta, it was built around a clear vision: an extra añejo with the depth of a collector's spirit but without the exclusivity or price barrier that usually comes with it. Made from hand-harvested 100% Blue Weber agave in Los Altos, the Highland region of Jalisco, the tequila spends two and a half years aging in American oak before a six-month finish in French Chardonnay casks — three years of total maturation through a deliberate double-cask process. The American oak builds the foundation: caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and warm agave richness. The Chardonnay finish adds the unexpected: stone fruit, honey, and a delicate buttery lift that sets it apart from traditional extra añejos. At the distillery, the liquid is literally serenaded with music during fermentation, a tradition that connects directly to the label's artwork. The striking matte-black bottle with neon green lettering features "The Serenata" — label art inspired by José Guadalupe Posada, Mexico's pioneering 19th-century artist and printmaker whose calavera imagery continues to define Mexican visual culture. The Serenata depicts the Mexican tradition of serenading a loved one beneath their window: a declaration meant to be heard, not whispered. At Espolon, that's not just art — it's how the tequila is made. It uses a double-cask process: 2.5 years in American oak followed by 6 months in French Chardonnay casks, adding stone fruit, honey, and a buttery elegance rarely found in the category. Most extra añejos only use American oak. Is Espolon Extra Añejo a sipping tequila? Yes — it's designed specifically for sipping neat or over a large ice cube. It also works beautifully in an elevated Tequila Old Fashioned, where the Chardonnay finish adds unexpected finesse to the cocktail. What does the Serenata label mean? It's inspired by the Mexican tradition of serenading a loved one — and connects directly to Espolon's production: the distillery literally plays music during fermentation, with sound waves helping shape the spirit's character before it reaches the barrel. How does Espolon Extra Añejo compare to whiskey? With three years of oak aging and a Chardonnay barrel finish, it stands comfortably alongside aged whiskeys in complexity and depth — making it an excellent gift alternative for whiskey or Scotch drinkers who haven't explored premium tequila.
