Epimedium x rubrum

(Mature Size: 8-12"T x 12-18"W) Foliage emerges tinged with red, turns green for summer and red again in the fall.  Cherry-red flowers appear in mid to late spring. Epimediums can be used alongside same sized hostas like ‘Beyond Glory’ and 'Christmas Candy’. They can also be used as border plants in front of larger upright hostas like ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ and ‘World Cup’. Epimediums prefer a cool shaded area that is moist but well drained. Epimedium is a tough plant that will survive in nearly any shady location. Though it prefers rich, moist, woodland soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, it will adapt to a wide range of conditions. It will even grow under large, thirsty trees. This plant is a slow grower, so mulching around the plants will help to keep the weeds away. Trimming off all of the old foliage in late winter will make room for a fresh flush of leaves and may increase flower production. Hardy to zones 4-8. What's My Zone?
