Flametail Blenny - Philippines

Enchelyurus flavipes The Flametail Blenny is a bold and eye-catching reef fish that adds both personality and function to a marine aquarium. Adults have a dark brown to nearly black body, dramatically contrasted by a bright yellow tail and posterior fins, giving the species its fiery appearance. Like other blennies, they lack a swim bladder and spend much of their time perched on rocks or darting into crevices, so an aquarium with plenty of live rock, ledges, and hiding places is essential. Flametail Blennies typically grow to about 4 inches (10 cm) and are best suited for tanks of 30 gallons or larger. They are generally peaceful toward other fish but may show territorial behavior toward other blennies or similarly shaped species. A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as they are prone to jumping. In the wild, this species inhabits shallow coral reefs of the western Pacific, including the South China Sea, where it can be seen grazing among rocks and rubble. They are omnivores, naturally feeding on algae and small invertebrates. In captivity, they thrive on a mixed diet of algae-based foods, spirulina pellets, and frozen items such as mysis or brine shrimp. Feeding twice daily helps maintain their energy and coloration. Considered reef-safe, Flametail Blennies generally leave corals and invertebrates untouched, though occasional individuals may nip at clam mantles. Their algae-grazing behavior makes them both a visually appealing and practical addition to reef aquariums.
