Emotional First Aid Kit (PDF)

Everyone has moments when their mood dips — when things feel heavy or just off. For clients struggling with emotional regulation skills, having a simple comforting tool within reach can make a big difference. That’s where an emotional first aid kit comes in: a sensory-based approach that reminds them that they have ways to soothe themselves. The Emotional First Aid Kit handout (Mood Support Kit) teaches clients how to build their own mood boosters using familiar, easy-to-find items based on the five senses. The handout encourages them to explore what feels comforting to touch, smell, taste, see, and hear. Each section also invites personal reflection on what brings them peace, calm, or joy. Putting together an emotional first aid kit empowers kids and teens to take ownership of their emotions in a healthy, non-judgmental way. They can start small by choosing just one item for each of the five senses and gradually personalize their kit as they notice what truly helps. With the support of a caring adult, they can turn this into a creative activity, like decorating a bag to hold their items. They can also give each item a special “power” name, like “calm stone” or “happy spray,” to make the experience more empowering. *This item is an instant digital download.
