Ember Along the Rolling Waves I took this photograph on a quiet evening at sunset on Martha’s Vineyard. I named it Ember Along the Rolling Wavesbecause that's what it felt like—an ember of light glowing across the edge of the sea, as if the horizon itself had caught fire. The waves kept rolling in, tireless and true, their crests catching the last of the sun’s gold. In that moment, I felt time loosen its grip. The sky burned orange and the water turned indigo, and I remembered again why I come to the ocean to listen, to feel, to return to myself. This sacred coastline isn’t just beauty—it’s knowledge, mystery, and warning. Just across the water, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution quietly carries out the essential work of understanding our oceans—mapping, tracking, researching life forms we’ve barely begun to know. We need their science, their technology, and their truth-telling now more than ever. As climate change accelerates, as sea levels rise and ecosystems vanish, supporting WHOI isn’t a luxury—it’s survival. Art may open hearts, but science must light the path. Together, they can help us preserve this breathtaking balance of flame and tide. Poem: Ember Along the Rolling Waves The sky opens like a wound of light— orange bleeding into the blue of memory. I stand at the lip of the world, the water speaking in tongues no nation has yet learned to honor. Each wave holds a future folded in salt, a silent equation of survival. We pretend not to hear it— the sea calling scientists and storytellers into covenant with what remains. The sun lowers like a promise kept only for a few more years. Its ember glows on water's breath, and I name it prayer, this burning edge of all we love. Beyond this frame, Woods Hole listens. Instruments reach where we cannot swim, data glimmers where myths once dwelled— science kneeling before the deep not to conquer, but to understand. Let us not turn from this knowing. Let us fund the watchers of the tide, the seekers of coral and current, who chart not just the sea, but the soul of Earth itself.
