Elegantissima Arborvitae

Elegantissima Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Elegantissima')Elegantissima Arborvitae is a bright, tidy evergreen that adds privacy and structure without feeling heavy or oversized. Its upright, narrow form fits neatly along property lines and foundations, giving you a clean green backdrop that makes nearby plantings look more polished. The foliage carries a lighter, fresher tone than many darker evergreens, which helps lift the look of mixed borders and screens. If you want an easy evergreen that reads well in every season, this cultivar delivers dependable coverage with a refined footprint. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection of American arborvitae forms a dense, narrow pyramidal to columnar plant with soft, scale-like sprays that layer tightly for a full appearance. Foliage is typically light green to yellow-green with warm golden tones, and it can take on bronzy coloring in winter, especially in exposed sites. The overall silhouette stays neat and vertical, making it a strong choice when you want height without excessive width. Small cones may appear, but the main appeal is the bright foliage tone and naturally orderly habit. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with the strongest color and density usually in brighter light. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is ideal, and it adapts to a range of soils if drainage is reasonable. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: 4 to 8. Site: Choose a spot with some shelter from drying winter wind for the best cold-season appearance. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a single plant as a bright evergreen focal point that adds clean vertical structure in a narrow space. Screening: Plant in rows for a lighter-toned privacy screen that feels fresh and finished year-round. Hedge: Maintain as a tailored hedge to define outdoor rooms and create calm, evergreen boundaries. Foundation Planting: Place at corners or along long walls to add height and softness without crowding walkways. Mixed Borders: Pair with darker conifers, broadleaf evergreens, and flowering shrubs to create strong color contrast and depth. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune lightly in late spring to early summer to refine shape, and avoid cutting back into bare, leafless wood. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate temperature swings, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk. Watering: Deeply water during heat and drought to reduce stress and help keep growth dense. Fertilizing: Feed in spring only if needed, using a slow-release evergreen fertilizer according to label directions. Winter Care: Reduce winter burn risk with good siting and consistent fall moisture, and gently brush off heavy, wet snow if it loads the branches. Why Choose Elegantissima Arborvitae? Brighter Evergreen Color: Adds a lighter green to golden tone that keeps screens and borders from feeling dark or flat. Space-Smart Shape: Provides height and privacy while staying relatively narrow for easier placement. Year-Round Structure: Holds a clean, upright outline that brings order to the landscape in every season. Versatile Function: Works well as a specimen, repeated hedge, or mixed-screen element alongside other evergreens. Simple Upkeep: Delivers a tidy look with basic watering, mulch, and occasional shaping. If you are looking for an evergreen that builds privacy while adding a brighter note to the landscape, Elegantissima Arborvitae is an easy fit. Give it a good start with consistent moisture, then keep up with deep watering during dry stretches for the fullest growth. It looks strong as a single accent, but it really shines when repeated for a clean screen or hedge. Over time, it becomes a dependable backbone plant that makes the whole planting feel more intentional.
