Educated

Educated by Tara Westover Educated is a powerful memoir that traces Tara Westover’s journey from a secluded, survivalist upbringing in rural Idaho to earning a PhD from University of Cambridge. Raised in a strict and often unstable household that rejected formal education, medical care, and government institutions, Westover grew up working in her family’s scrap yard with little access to the outside world. With no traditional schooling, she taught herself enough to pass the ACT and gain admission to college, where she first encountered the wider world of ideas, history, and critical thinking. As her education expands, so does her awareness of the limitations and dangers of her upbringing, leading to deep internal conflict between loyalty to family and the pursuit of truth. Through vivid and often unsettling storytelling, Westover recounts experiences of hardship, resilience, and transformation. Educated is ultimately a story about the cost of self-invention—the courage it takes to question one’s past, seek knowledge, and redefine identity in the face of profound opposition.
