My favorite movie of all time is The Sound of Music! It is my safest, most warm and cozy place. (And, why is it always on at Christmas? There's not even any Christmas in it! But I love it so!) My birthday is on Christmas Eve, and I remember it always being on TV around then (and, of course, I had the pirated 90s VHS, because, obviously). For those of you that haven't seen the movie, Christopher Plumber plays Captain von Trapp, and in it, he sings the song Edelweiss (well, actually, his voice is overdubbed with Bill Lee's voice). Edelweiss is an Austrian flower, and it's a symbol of devotion. In the film, and at the time, it was a symbol of the captain's devotion to his country, but the name Edelweiss was given to the flower because it can withstand even the difficult snowy mountain climate. I knew I wanted to create two huge sketches for my dining room, and for this collection, and I chose this little white flower to be one of the two sketches because I loved it's meaning – both in my nostalgia for the movie, but also that this beautiful and delicate flower can exist in fields on snowy, windy and cold mountain tops. Beauty growing amidst the hard – my life's mission.
