ECO is the ultimate exterior housepaint–especially when used during the construction phase where all wooden elements are encapsulated with FPE Oil Primer or ECO Primer and painted on all sides before nailing in place. This system can be expected to yield fifteen to twenty years of beauty and protection. ECO is not recommended for exterior use on masonry surfaces, stucco, or homes which have previously experienced moisture related paint problems. ECO is primarily intended for use on interior and exterior woodwork and trim.  It may also be used on interior walls and ceilings which have been properly prepared and primed with the appropriate FPE Primer.  However, please note that the use of our 100% acrylic Eurolux Matte or Flat finish paints is what is typically recommended on walls and ceilings.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]IMPORTANT NOTE Fine Paints of Europe sells paint systems. We do not sell individual products for use with primers from other manufacturers. Please make certain that you are using the correct Fine Paints of Europe primer specified for your coating. Coverage rates with Fine Paints of Europe are dramatically better than with domestic coatings when used with one of our “high build- high tooth” primers. Never apply a Fine Paints of Europe paint to a surface which has been primed with a sealer such as Shellac, Bin™ or Kilz™. These are fine products when used for their intended purpose but they do not provide adequate friction for great adhesion with our coatings. SURFACE PREPARATION Surfaces to be painted should be dry, free of dust, chalk, grease, rust and all foreign material which would affect adhesion. Dust and Chalk must be removed by scrubbing with mild, powdered detergent and warm water and rinsed with fresh water. NEVER prepare surfaces by washing with a petroleum-based liquid soap, which can affect adhesion. Grease and wax should be removed with lacquer thinner. Surfaces such as kitchen cabinets or furniture that may have been waxed with a silicon-based product, or stained, varnished or oiled should be treated with a deglossing agent such as Wil-Bond before priming with ECO or FPE Oil Primer/Undercoat. When mildew is encountered, it must be removed thoroughly by washing with a mild bleach and TSP solution. It is imperative that all bleach residue be removed by rinsing with water. When painting metal surfaces, all corrosion and rust must be removed; prime with the appropriate FPE metal primer. When painting wooden surfaces, knots must be sealed with shellac to prevent bleeding before priming. Glossy surfaces must be dulled by a light hand sanding or a dulling agent (liquid sandpaper). TIP: KIDDIE POOLS FOR ADULTS One of the few disadvantages of working with great brilliant enamels like Hollandlac and ECO is that pigments in both of these coatings are extremely finely ground, very much like automobile paints and therefore these paints tend to reveal airborne contamination (the type of dust particles that float in the air of even the cleanest homes) to a much greater degree than coarsely ground, lower quality coatings. Interesting to discover a marketing advantage offered by low quality coatings which is not yet being extolled by the big boxes! When painting furniture or cabinet components we recommend that the work be done in a garage or basement with a “wet floor”. The floor should be wet down with mop and bucket at least 24 hours prior to application of paint and kept wet throughout the process in order to serve as a magnet to airborne dust. Where it is not possible to move work to areas suitable for wet floor treatment, many of our best professional contractors utilize inexpensive “kiddie pools” in which they place a half inch of water at least a day or two before beginning paint application. The use of a fan during this air-cleansing period is recommended as it is the circulation of air over water which effectively cleanses the air. The fan and heat/air conditioning system should be shut off immediately before beginning application of coatings and kept off for two hours after completion of paint application in order to prevent air movement before the paint sets up. (Exhaust fans required when working with solventborne coatings should not be shut off.) APPLICATION Tools: Apply by brush, roller or spray. Please note: Fine Paints of Europe recognizes spray application as an excellent method to apply our coatings, however we do not consult on the specifications nor the equipment needed to do so. New, unpainted surfaces: After surface preparation (sanding, etc.) and cleaning, apply one coat ECO Primer/Undercoat or FPE Oil Primer/Undercoat. If painting exterior wood, moisture levels should not exceed 14%. Primer coat should be sanded with 220 grit paper. Then apply two generous, even coats of ECO. Apply the paint and then walk away. Do not overwork this finish.Sanding between top coats of ECO Brilliant with 220 to 320 grit paper is necessary for adhesion. Sanding between top coats of ECO Brilliant with 220 to 320 grit paper is necessary for adhesion On surfaces previously painted: Surfaces previously painted with latex paint should be primed first prior to painting. Apply ECO following a light sanding and thorough cleaning to remove dust and foreign material. Painted surfaces that do require heavy sanding or scraping should be cleaned and then primed with ECO or FPE Oil Primer/ Undercoat before applying two generous coats of ECO. Apply the paint and then walk away. Do not overwork this paint – brush it on and walk away. ECO should be stirred well before use. If this finish drags or does not level perfectly it may be thinned slightly with water. Do not apply at temperatures below 40°F or above 80°F or when relative humidity exceeds 80%. MAINTENANCE Easy to clean. Wash (scrub if necessary) with a mild, powdered detergent and warm water, rinse and dry (buff) thoroughly to prevent water spots.
