Echeveria 'Gothika'

Description Echeveria 'Gothika' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Echeveria 'Gothika' is a rare gothic succulent from the Echeveria genus, a group native to Mexico and Central America. It has a devoted following among collectors for its dramatic dark purple coloration and compact form.   The leaves are thick and fleshy, arranged in a symmetrical rosette with deep purple to nearly black tones that deepen in bright light. Each leaf has a smooth, waxy texture with subtle pointed tips. 'Gothika' typically reaches 4 to 6 inches across, making it an excellent choice for small spaces, desks, and container gardens.   'Gothika' is resilient and can go up to ten days without water. It rotates regularly to maintain even coloration across the rosette. You can move it outside during summer months, though it needs protection from rain and is not frost tolerant.   'Gothika' works on bright windowsills, under office LED lights, or as an indoor houseplant year-round in colder climates. It is safe around cats and dogs.   Echeveria 'Gothika' grows well in bright indirect light to full sun for optimal deep purple coloration.   Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 7 to 14 days.   'Gothika' grows well in well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix with added perlite for drainage.   It prefers temperatures between 65 and 75°F and is not frost tolerant below 32°F.   'Gothika' is a slow-growing rosette that requires minimal fertilizer, benefiting from diluted cactus fertilizer monthly during spring.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11 and cannot tolerate frost below 32°F. It grows outdoors in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, parts of coastal Oregon, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi. In colder zones, it does well as an indoor houseplant or can spend summers outdoors with winter protection. Q: How often should I water Echeveria 'Gothika'? A: Every 7 to 14 days during the growing season once soil has dried completely. Reduce watering frequency in winter months. Q: Is it safe for pets? A: Echeveria 'Gothika' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs. Q: What light does 'Gothika' need to maintain its dark color? A: Bright indirect light to full sun brings out the deepest purple tones. In low light, the color may fade to a lighter shade and it should be rotated regularly for even color development. Q: How large does it get? A: 'Gothika' typically reaches 4 to 6 inches across at maturity, maintaining a compact, symmetrical rosette form. Q: Can 'Gothika' survive outdoor summers in cold climates? A: Move it outside from late spring through early fall, but bring it back indoors before the first frost. It cannot survive freezing temperatures. Q: What causes leaf damage or discoloration on this plant? A: Direct airflow from heating and air conditioning units can stress 'Gothika', and excessive watering leads to soft, translucent leaves. Overwatered soil also encourages root rot.
