c. 1920s-1940s; Pullman Company - Chicago, IL Rectangular porcelain-on-steel railway instruction sign with white block lettering on a black enamel ground, reading: "TO GET IN OR OUT OF UPPER BERTH, PLEASE USE THE LADDER. RING THE BELL AND ASK THE PORTER FOR IT." This example carries the full extended instruction, directly tied to Pullman sleeper car service where porters assisted passengers. The sign features four corner mounting holes and a compact format intended for interior placement within sleeping compartments. Heavy surface wear reveals layers of use, with the enamel field now showing mottled oxidation, speckling, and areas of loss that expose the metal beneath. The typography remains bold and legible despite the deterioration, preserving its utilitarian clarity. Shows heavy wear including extensive enamel loss, oxidation across the face, edge chipping, and corrosion around mounting holes. Reverse exhibits significant oxidation and surface degradation consistent with long-term use. 5" W x 4.5" H MM - C-19679 - 033126 For information regarding shipping, please visit our Terms & Conditions page here.
