Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Modesto, California  |  VS (Very Special)  |  Distillery: E. & J. Gallo Winery Production & Heritage E. & J. Gallo Winery, founded in 1933 by brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo, is headquartered in Modesto in California's Central Valley. E&J VS is distilled from a blend of French Colombard, Folle Blanche, St. Emilion, and early Barbera wine grapes — a diverse base that contributes both fruit-forward brightness and subtle depth. Each vintage year of brandy is distilled within three months of fermentation, a deliberate practice designed to capture the freshest possible flavor and aroma from the grape must before oxidation or off-notes can develop. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with sweet dried fruit and ripe apple, followed by gentle wafts of toasted oak and vanilla. Subtle brown baking spices round out the bouquet. Taste: The palate entry is soft and light-bodied, leading with apple and citrus. At mid-palate, layers of toasted oak emerge alongside hints of tropical fruit and vanilla. A touch of warm spice builds gradually toward the finish. Finish: The finish is crisp and clean, fading relatively quickly with lingering traces of vanilla and light oak. It avoids any harsh burn, staying smooth through the close. How to Drink E&J VS E&J VS works well over ice or with a splash of water, which opens up the fruit character without diluting the brandy's light body excessively. Its clean, approachable profile also makes it a reliable cocktail base. Brandy Sour: The apple and citrus notes complement fresh lemon juice and simple syrup, creating a balanced, refreshing sour. Sidecar: E&J VS provides a fruit-forward foundation that pairs naturally with Cointreau and lemon juice without overwhelming the cocktail's structure. Brandy and Ginger: The vanilla and spice tones in the brandy amplify the warmth of ginger ale for a simple, crowd-friendly highball. E&J VS is a soft, light-bodied brandy dominated by apple, toasted oak, and vanilla, with secondary notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and gentle brown spice. The finish is clean and crisp rather than heavy or tannic. How does E&J VS compare to Spanish brandy like Fundador? Spanish brandies such as Fundador Solera tend to lean heavier on caramel and dried-fruit sweetness from solera aging, while E&J VS emphasizes fresh fruit character and a lighter body thanks to its rapid post-fermentation distillation. Both occupy a similar value tier, though E&J has significantly wider distribution in the United States. Is E&J VS good for cocktails? E&J VS is an excellent cocktail brandy because its light body and clean fruit profile blend easily without fighting other ingredients, making it particularly effective in Sidecars, Brandy Sours, and highballs. Where is E&J VS made? E&J VS is produced at the E. & J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, California, located in the state's Central Valley. The grapes used — French Colombard, Folle Blanche, St. Emilion, and Barbera — are sourced from California vineyards. What foods pair well with E&J VS? Apple tarts and fruit-based desserts echo the brandy's core fruit notes. Mild cheeses like brie or young gouda complement its soft texture. Dark chocolate works against the vanilla and oak backdrop. Roasted almonds mirror the toasted spice character. Crème brûlée pairs well with the vanilla and caramel undertones. What sizes does E&J VS come in? E&J VS is available in multiple formats including 200ml, 375ml, 750ml, 1L, and the 1.75L handle size reviewed here. Is E&J VS worth the price? E&J VS positions firmly in the value tier of the American brandy category, and the 1.75L format delivers strong volume for the price. It is not intended to compete with aged European eaux-de-vie but rather to serve as a dependable, everyday brandy for mixing and casual sipping. Why E&J VS? What sets E&J VS apart from many competing value brandies is its multi-grape base — the combination of French Colombard, Folle Blanche, St. Emilion, and Barbera creates a broader flavor spectrum than single-varietal alternatives. The practice of distilling each vintage within three months of fermentation preserves primary fruit freshness that longer-rested musts would lose. The Silver Medal at the 2006 New World Wine Competition confirms that the liquid holds up to formal evaluation despite its accessible price point. In the 1.75L format, E&J VS functions as one of the most practical brandy options available for anyone building cocktails at volume or keeping a reliable bottle on hand.
