Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 Proof)  |  Origin: Cognac, France  |  VSOP (Minimum 4.5 Years)  |  Distillery: Château de Cognac Production & Heritage D'ussé VSOP is produced at the historic Château de Cognac, one of the oldest and most storied distilleries in the Cognac region. The spirit is made from Ugni Blanc grapes, double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills, and matured in French oak barrels for no fewer than four and a half years. What distinguishes this particular distillery is its cellar environment: situated near the Charente River, the cellars reach humidity levels near 90%, a natural condition that contributes to the cognac's notable smoothness and rounded floral character. Tasting Notes Aroma: A powerful bouquet opens with deep woody notes before revealing layers of cinnamon bark and delicate floral tones. The nose is rich but not overwhelming, hinting at the complexity waiting on the palate. Taste: The entry is distinctly smooth, with a silky texture that coats the palate immediately. At mid-palate, warm spice and toasted almond emerge alongside cinnamon, while dried fig and a Port-like suggestion of red fruit add unexpected depth. The liquid carries a deep copper-penny hue that signals its extended oak aging. Finish: The finish lingers at a medium-to-long length, with subtle accents of honey and dried fruits gradually fading. A gentle warmth carries the spice notes through to the end without harshness. How to Drink D'ussé VSOP Neat or with a single ice cube is the most direct way to appreciate the layered spice and fruit character. A few drops of water can open up the floral aromatics further. Sidecar: The almond and cinnamon notes play beautifully against Cointreau and fresh lemon juice. Sazerac: D'ussé VSOP's dried fruit richness and smooth body make it a natural fit for this cognac-forward New Orleans classic. French Connection: Paired with amaretto, the cognac's existing almond notes create a seamless, warming nightcap. Why D'ussé VSOP? What separates D'ussé VSOP from much of the crowded VSOP category is its production environment. The near-90% humidity of the Château de Cognac cellars — a result of the distillery's proximity to the Charente River — imparts a distinctive smoothness and floral roundness that copper pot distillation and French oak aging alone cannot achieve. The 92-point score from Wine Enthusiast and a Gold Medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition confirm that this is not simply a brand-driven release but a technically accomplished cognac. The 200ml format makes it one of the more accessible ways to experience a genuinely distinguished VSOP expression.
