DSSC Bite Wedge

DSSC Bite Wedge Dog Sport Supply Co. · Available in DURACOT™ (Multiple Colors) & Jute · Grip, Targeting & Bite Strength Development The DSSC Bite Wedge is a specialized training tool built to develop a dog's grip, target precision, and bite strength for protection work, K9 training, and dog sports like IGP. Its angled profile teaches dogs how to safely and effectively target and bite different parts of the body, bridging the gap between a basic tug toy and a full protective sleeve. Available in DURACOT™, offered in multiple colors, or Jute for the traditional bite feel. Angled wedge profile: The shape presents a defined targeting surface, teaching the dog to commit to a precise, full grip rather than a shallow or surface-level bite. Bridges tug and sleeve work: Sits between basic tug play and a full protective sleeve in the training progression, giving handlers a controlled tool for teaching body-targeting before advancing to decoy equipment. Builds bite strength and grip endurance: Repeated wedge work develops the muscle engagement and grip confidence a dog needs before taking on harder equipment. Precision targeting: Useful for teaching dogs to target specific areas on command, a foundational skill for protection sport and K9 work. Available in DURACOT™, multiple colors: Dog Sport Supply Co.'s exclusive double-layer fabric, offered in a range of colors for kit matching or dog/handler rotation. Available in Jute: The traditional protection sport bite surface, for handlers running dogs on jute equipment elsewhere in their program. Specs Type: Angled bite wedge, grip and targeting tool Function: Grip development, target precision, bite strength building Materials: DURACOT™ (multiple colors) / Jute (select at purchase) Brand: Dog Sport Supply Co. Best for: Protection work, K9 training, IGP/Schutzhund, French Ring, KNPV, PSA. Dogs progressing from tug play toward sleeve and decoy work. Where the Wedge Fits in Your Training Progression Basic tug toy: Introduces prey drive, grip engagement, and general play. No targeting demands. DSSC Bite Wedge (this item): Adds a defined target and angled bite surface, teaching the dog to commit to precise, full-mouth grips on different body positions. Full protective sleeve / decoy equipment: Advanced equipment for dogs with an established, confident grip, ready for live decoy work and sport-specific bite scenarios. DURACOT™ vs. Jute — Material Guide DURACOT™: Dog Sport Supply Co.'s exclusive double-layer woven fabric, available in multiple colors. Holds up under repeated wedge work and frequent training. Jute: Natural fiber with a firm, traditional bite surface used across IGP, French Ring, and KNPV training for decades. Keeps bite feel consistent if your dog already works on jute equipment. Not sure? Go DURACOT™ for durability and color choice. Go Jute to match existing jute equipment in your program. Quick tip: Use the wedge to reinforce full, calm grips rather than fast, shallow bites. Reward the dog for committing fully to the target and holding, not for speed. Grip quality built here carries directly over to sleeve and decoy work later. Designed by Dog Sport Supply Co. for handlers building precise, confident bite work at every stage of training. FAQs What does a bite wedge actually train? Grip, targeting, and bite strength. The angled shape gives the dog a defined surface to commit to, teaching them to take a full, precise grip on a specific target rather than a random or shallow bite. It's a foundational skill for protection work and K9 training. How is this different from a basic tug toy? A tug toy builds general prey drive and engagement with no targeting requirement. The Bite Wedge adds a defined angled surface that trains the dog to target and commit to a full grip on command, which is a more advanced skill than simple tug play. Is this a substitute for a full protective sleeve? No. The wedge is a bridge tool between tug play and sleeve work. It builds the grip and targeting foundation a dog needs before moving to full decoy equipment, but it doesn't replace that equipment or live decoy training. Which material and color should I choose? DURACOT™ holds up better under frequent wedge work and comes in multiple colors, useful for color-coding gear across dogs or handlers. Jute is the right call if your dog already trains on jute equipment elsewhere and you want consistency across your program. What age or skill level is the Bite Wedge appropriate for? Dogs with an established grip from tug and basic bite work who are ready to build targeting precision and bite strength. It's a progression tool, so timing depends on the dog's foundation, not a fixed age.
