This original 1936 German country of origin poster for Dschungel, Tempel und Dämonen (Jungle, Temples and Demons) captures the era of early expedition cinema. The film documented Paul Hartlmaier’s 18,000 kilometer journey across India in German small cars, presenting landscapes, temples, and cultural scenes through the lens of pre war German filmmaking. Designed by WEM, the poster centers on a vivid masked performer framed by golden temple imagery, giving it an immediate sense of mystery and adventure. Its strong typography, saturated colors, and large format construction reflect the visual language of German posters from the period, originally printed in two sections and joined for theater display. The swastika emblem belongs to the DDAC, the Deutsche Automobil Club, which had been taken over by the Nazi Party in 1933 and absorbed all independent motoring groups. While the film itself was a documentary travelogue, its promotion was tied to state controlled automotive and travel campaigns that emphasized German technological ambition and global reach. This adds an important layer of historical context to the piece. A rare example of pre war documentary film advertising, it stands as both a striking work of vintage graphic design and a tangible record of Germany’s cultural and political climate in the mid 1930s.
