Choose a full sun location with well-drained soil. Provide steady moisture during germination and early growth. Depending on the variety, allow room for bush or vining growth habits. Maintain consistent watering through flowering and pod set. For shell beans, harvest when pods are filled but still tender. For dry beans, allow pods to mature and dry on the plant as long as weather permits. Harvest mature pods, shell the beans, and finish drying indoors in a well-ventilated area until beans are fully hard. Harvest & Storage: Once completely dry, store beans in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Properly dried beans can remain viable for long-term pantry storage and are excellent for soups, stews, beans and rice, refried beans, succotash, and traditional Southern dishes. This collection supports a practical garden strategy: grow legumes through summer, enjoy some fresh, and dry the rest to build a dependable, homegrown protein source for the months ahead.
