More Info. Stress and Adrenal Fatigue Healthy function of your adrenal glands is essential for stress recovery and maintaining energy and vitality during stressful times. As part of your stress response system, your adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis such as the death of a loved one, a physical crisis such as major surgery, or any type of repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to each stress and maintain homeostasis. Adrenal fatigue is produced when your adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of the stress you are experiencing. During adrenal fatigue, your adrenal glands function but not well enough to maintain optimal homeostasis. This means the output of regulatory hormones by your adrenals is somewhat diminished – usually from over-stimulation.* Over-stimulation of your adrenals can be caused either by a very intense single stress, or by chronic or repeated stresses that have a cumulative effect.* Adrenal fatigue can be mild and transient, for example the tiredness typically experienced during recovery from an illness or after vigorous exercise, or it can be severe and lasting enough to greatly reduce your ability to keep up with your life’s demands and maintain normal work and home activities. Adrenal fatigue is not the same as Addison’s disease, which results from damage to the adrenal glands through disease or physical injury.
