DPS Pisteworks 89 Alpine Ski

89 mm Carving Ski DPS Pisteworks 89 Alpine Ski The DPS Pisteworks 89 is a carving ski for skiers who spend the day on groomers but do not want to be locked into one kind of turn. A 125-89-113 mm sidecut at 178 cm with a 16 m radius bends into a tight arc on demand, and more tip and tail taper and rocker than the narrower Pisteworks 79 lets the tail release into a slarve instead of holding until the skier is done with it. The DPS Pisteworks 89 is built without metal, using full carbon laminates over a poplar and red oak core with a carbon plate underfoot, which is how the ski holds an edge without the weight a titanal carver carries. Expert Review Specs and setup notes from the CCBB ski desk. Is This the Right Ski for You? Best For Advanced and expert frontside skiers who want serious edge grip on groomers plus a ski that will break loose and slarve when they ease off. Consider Another Ski If You want the most precise carving ski available, since the DPS Pisteworks 89 adds taper and rocker that a narrower, straighter carver does not, and gives up some edge-to-edge urgency. The dual layer core pairs poplar for liveliness with red oak for damping and grip, which is what lets a carbon ski hold an edge under load. A carbon plate underfoot stiffens the ski between the bindings so power goes into the edge rather than into flex where the boot sits. More tip and tail taper and rocker than the narrower Pisteworks 79 lets the tail wash when a skier wants it to, which is unusual in a carving ski. Best Uses Groomer days and firm snow at the resort Short to medium radius carved turns Skiers who want a carver that also slarves and slashes Chopped afternoon groomers and soft bumps Pairing with an alpine or GripWalk binding Ski Selection Advice Length selection on the DPS Pisteworks 89 follows normal frontside sizing. The run is 158, 165, 171, 178, and 184 cm, and the 16 m radius holds a short enough arc that most skiers do not need to size down for quickness. Skiers who want the ski to feel even more eager can take the shorter length, and skiers who ski fast and open should take the longer one to keep the 16 m arc stable. The DPS Pisteworks 89 carries a factory-marked recommended mount line, and we mount to that line unless a skier asks for something else. Brake width has to clear the 89 mm waist, so an 85 to 100 mm brake is the working range. Match the binding to your boot sole norm rather than to the ski, since a ski does not carry a sole norm and the binding is what has to accept the boot. A carving ski earns more from a good tune than any other ski in the catalog. The DPS Pisteworks 89 ships with a factory tune and Phantom Glide already cured into the base, so the ski is ready to ski out of the wrapper, and edge angles are the thing to revisit once a skier knows how they want it to grip. The DPS Pisteworks 89 is easier to bend and quicker to come around at a 16 m radius. Skiers who ski fast on open groomers take the 94, and skiers who want to work the fall line take the 89. Shop the DPS Pisteworks 94 DPS Pisteworks 89 vs. DPS Kaizen 100 The DPS Kaizen 100 is the all-mountain ski of the two, with 45 percent rocker and a 100 mm waist for soft snow. The DPS Pisteworks 89 is 89 mm with camber underfoot and a carbon plate for edge grip. The choice is whether the day is mostly groomers or mostly everything else. Shop the DPS Kaizen 100 DPS Pisteworks 89 vs. DPS Kaizen 105 The DPS Kaizen 105 is a 105 mm all-mountain ski on an 18 m radius, built for variable snow and long turns. The DPS Pisteworks 89 gives up float to grip harder on firm snow at a 16 m radius. Skiers who ski hardpack most of the season take the Pisteworks 89 and keep the Kaizen 105 for storm days. Shop the DPS Kaizen 105 Common Questions Who should buy the DPS Pisteworks 89? The DPS Pisteworks 89 suits advanced and expert skiers who ski groomers most of the time and want a carving ski with a playful side. A 16 m radius at 178 cm carves a short arc, and the extra tip and tail taper lets the ski release rather than hold every turn to the end. Does the DPS Pisteworks 89 need metal to hold an edge? No, and the assumption that a carving ski needs titanal is the main thing skiers get wrong about this ski. The DPS Pisteworks 89 uses full carbon laminates over a poplar and red oak core with a carbon plate underfoot, and the red oak supplies the damping that metal usually provides. What the ski gives up is mass, not grip. What bindings and brake width work with the DPS Pisteworks 89? Match brake width to the 89 mm waist, which puts the working range at 85 to 100 mm. The DPS Pisteworks 89 takes alpine, GripWalk, and hybrid bindings, and no reinforcing plate is required. Match the binding to your boot sole norm rather than to the ski, because a ski does not carry a sole norm and the binding is what has to accept the boot. What length DPS Pisteworks 89 should I get? Take your usual frontside length. The run is 158, 165, 171, 178, and 184 cm, and the 16 m radius is short enough that most skiers do not need to size down for quickness. Skiers who ski fast on open groomers should take the longer length to keep the arc settled. Is the DPS Pisteworks 89 new for this season? Yes. The Pisteworks line started with the 79 and the 94, and the DPS Pisteworks 89 fills the gap between them for this model year. The shape leans toward the freeride end of the family, with more taper and rocker than the 79 and a shorter radius than the 94. What does the DPS Pisteworks 89 weigh? DPS does not publish a weight for the DPS Pisteworks 89, and we will not print a figure we cannot source. A full carbon layup with no metal puts the ski below a comparable titanal carver, but that is a construction statement rather than a number. We will post a measured weight once a pair is in the shop. Can the DPS Pisteworks 89 handle soft snow? The DPS Pisteworks 89 handles chopped groomers and soft bumps well, because the tapered tip and tail release rather than catch. Deep snow is a different question. At 89 mm underfoot with a 125 mm shovel, the ski has neither the width nor the rocker to plane, so a storm day calls for a different pair. Our Verdict The DPS Pisteworks 89 is the carving ski for a skier who does not want to be told how to turn. A 16 m radius at 178 cm bends into a short arc, camber underfoot and Rockwell 48 edges hold it, and a carbon plate between the bindings puts power into the edge, while the tapered tip and tail let the ski wash out when a skier asks. Building it without metal is the interesting decision, and the poplar and red oak core is what makes that work. Skiers who want the most precise possible carver should look at a narrower ski with less taper at the ends.
