When shopping for a down-filled product like a comforter, pillow, quilt or jacket, the choice between goose down and duck down often comes up. Both materials come from waterfowl, but there are some key differences that may influence your decision. Here’s a comparison of the two to help you make an informed choice for your next purchase. Fill Power – Fill power measures the loft or puffiness of down and indicates how well the material insulates. The higher the fill power (FP), the warmer and more lightweight the down will be. Goose down generally has a higher fill power than duck down, ranging from 450 FP with premium goose down reaching up to 1000 FP. In contrast, duck down typically falls within the 450 FP to 850 FP range. Eider Duck down can reach up to 1200 FP and is considered the premier down available on the market, with a very premium price. While goose down is often seen as the premium choice due to its larger clusters and better insulation, duck down can perform just as well, especially in lower fill power ranges. The difference is mainly in the size of the down clusters — larger clusters provide more insulation and are generally more resilient. 850 FP duck down is just as efficient an insulator as 850 FP goose down, and is generally much less expensive. Odor – Natural down retains oils and fats that help with resilience and pliability, which can give it a faint, natural odor. Goose down and duck down can both have this smell, although it tends to be minimal and fades over time. If you’re sensitive to smells, airing your down-filled product in the sun for a few hours can help remove any lingering odors. Durability – The durability of down is influenced by its fat and oil content, which help it stay pliable and resistant to moisture. Goose down generally has a slightly higher fat content due to the larger birds and their natural living conditions. As a result, goose down tends to be more durable and resilient than duck down. However, both types of down can last a long time if properly cared for, so be sure to follow care instructions to avoid stripping down of oils during cleaning. We recommend using a premium down wash when you do need to finally clean your down items, regular detergent can strip the oils from the down clusters. Color – Both goose and duck down come in shades of white or gray. While this doesn’t affect the down’s performance, white down is often preferred in bedding as it is less visible when it sheds, especially on light-colored fabrics. Final Thoughts – Ultimately, whether you choose duck down or goose down depends on your needs and preferences. While goose down is often considered more luxurious due to its higher fill power and larger clusters, duck down can offer similar warmth and comfort at a more affordable price. Both types of down, when sourced from reputable manufacturers, will provide excellent insulation, loft, and long-lasting quality for your DIY projects or bedding needs. The choice comes down to factors like budget, fill power preferences, and how you plan to use the down.
