Double Play Big Bang Spirea

Double Play Big Bang Spirea (Spiraea japonica 'Tracy')Double Play Big Bang Spirea is a compact, mounded shrub that delivers bright foliage color and oversized pink blooms in one easy package. New growth emerges in warm orange tones, then matures to a vivid yellow that keeps beds looking energized all summer. In early summer, massive pink flower clusters light up the plant and draw in pollinators and hummingbirds. It is dependable in full sun, simple to maintain, and a strong fit for small spaces and high-visibility beds. Distinctive FeaturesThis Japanese spirea stands out for its bold foliage progression, starting with orange to red-tinged new growth in spring, shifting to bright yellow for summer, then returning to richer golden orange tones in fall. Flat-topped clusters of bright pink flowers are notably large for a spirea and bloom on new growth, which helps the plant rebound with fresh color after trimming. The habit is naturally dense and mounded, creating a clean outline that works well in both formal and casual designs. Its long season of interest comes from the combined impact of colorful leaves and showy bloom. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part sun for best foliage color and flowering. Soil: Average, well-drained soil, adaptable to many garden soils when drainage is reasonable. Water: Average moisture, water regularly to establish, then water during extended dry periods as needed. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8. Mature Size: Typically 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Habit: Dense, mounded, and compact. Bloom Season: Early summer into summer, with repeat bloom possible after trimming. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point at the front of a sunny bed where the yellow foliage and huge pink blooms can lead the planting. Edging: Line walkways and bed fronts for a tidy border that stays compact and colorful. Mass Planting: Plant in drifts to create a bright, uniform ribbon of foliage and long-running flower color. Foundation Planting: Place along foundations where a dense mound adds definition without blocking windows. Containers: Use in large containers to bring bold foliage and summer bloom close to patios and entries. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Shear lightly after the first bloom flush to encourage repeat flowering and refresh foliage color. Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant looking neat and to promote additional blooms. Watering: Water during prolonged drought, especially in the first growing season, for best vigor and bloom. Fertilizing: Apply a light, balanced feeding in spring only if needed, because excess fertility can reduce flowering and loosen habit. Renewal: In late winter to early spring, remove a few older stems at the base to maintain density over time. Why Choose Double Play Big Bang Spirea? Oversized Pink Blooms: Extra-large pink flower clusters deliver strong early summer color. Colorful Foliage: Orange spring growth matures to bright yellow for summer and finishes with warm fall tones.
