6"x8" There’s something wonderfully mechanical about the Mallaspis beetle. With its armored body, long antennae, and hefty mandibles, it looks less like an insect and more like a tiny piece of machinery that wandered out of the forest. Found in Central and South America, Mallaspis is a genus of longhorn beetles whose larvae develop inside wood, happily chewing away before emerging as adults. Their substantial size and exaggerated features make them particularly striking specimens. Basically, if you asked us to draw a beetle from memory, then made it significantly weirder, you’d probably end up somewhere around here.
