Myrtle Spurge

Myrtle Spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites)Myrtle Spurge is a low, sculptural perennial that brings bold, blue-gray foliage to sunny, dry spaces where many plants look stressed. Its trailing stems and tight, spiraled leaves create a clean, modern texture that reads well in rock gardens, gravel beds, and along walls. In spring, chartreuse to yellow flower bracts brighten the tips and add a surprising pop of color above the cool foliage. Once established, it handles heat and drought with ease, making it a strong choice for low-water landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesThis evergreen to semi-evergreen spurge forms short, outward-growing to trailing stems lined with fleshy, blue-green to blue-gray leaves arranged in tight spirals. In spring, clusters of chartreuse to yellow bracts appear at stem tips and can be very showy up close. The plant stays low but can spread, and it may self-seed in favorable conditions, which is an advantage in tough sites but can be a concern where you want strict boundaries. Like many spurges, it contains a milky sap that can irritate skin, so careful handling is important. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for the best color and the tightest habit. Soil: Dry, well-drained soil, especially gritty, sandy, or rocky soils, and avoid heavy, wet ground. Water: Low once established, water occasionally during extended drought, and avoid consistently damp conditions. USDA Zones: 5 to 8. Mature Size: About 4 to 8 inches tall, with stems that can trail 6 inches to 24 inches, and a spread often around 12 to 18 inches or more over time. Notable Traits: Drought tolerant, salt tolerant in many coastal-style settings, and can self-seed and spread in some regions. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use Myrtle Spurge as a focal point in a gravel bed or rock garden where the blue-gray foliage and spring bracts can stand out cleanly. Rock Gardens: Perfect for crevices, slopes, and rocky pockets where drainage is fast and heat is intense. Edging and Walls: Trails nicely over retaining walls and along path edges for a structured, sculptural finish. Dry Borders: Adds evergreen texture to sunny borders with lean soil and low irrigation. Containers: Works in pots with sharp drainage when you want architectural foliage and spring color. Low Maintenance Care Handling: Wear gloves when cutting or moving plants because the sap can irritate skin and eyes. Pruning: Remove spent flower stems after bloom to keep plants tidy and reduce unwanted self-seeding. Watering: Let soil dry between waterings, and do not overwater in summer or winter. Soil Management: Improve drainage with grit or plant on a slope or raised area if soil is heavy. Containment: Monitor spread and seedlings, removing extras early if you want a tighter footprint. Why Choose Myrtle Spurge? Drought Ready: Thrives in hot, dry conditions once established with minimal irrigation. Blue-Gray Foliage: Delivers strong, modern texture that keeps beds looking designed all season. Spring Color: Chartreuse to yellow bracts add a bright seasonal accent when many dry-garden plants are still waking up. Lean-Soil Performer: Handles poor, rocky soils that challenge many perennials. Deer Tolerance: Often avoided by deer, though browsing can vary by site and season. If you need a low, architectural plant for full sun and fast drainage, Myrtle Spurge brings year-round texture with a clean spring highlight. Place it where its spread is welcome or easy to manage, and avoid wet soils that can shorten its life. Pair it with sedums, ornamental grasses, and other drought-tolerant perennials for a cohesive, low-water look. With simple post-bloom cleanup and smart placement, it stays bold, tidy, and dependable.
