Don Egolf Chinese Redbud

Don Egolf Chinese Redbud (Cercis chinensis 'Don Egolf') Don Egolf Chinese Redbud is a compact flowering tree that delivers a concentrated spring bloom show without demanding a lot of space. In early spring, the branches fill with rich pink to magenta flowers, giving you a bold burst of color before the leaves emerge. As the season moves on, tidy, heart-shaped green foliage forms a dense canopy that looks clean and well-kept in beds, courtyards, and near patios. It is a reliable way to add seasonal drama and a refined silhouette in landscapes where a larger tree would feel out of scale. Distinctive Features This Chinese redbud is valued for heavy flowering and a naturally rounded, compact habit that stays neat with minimal shaping. It typically matures around 8 to 10 feet tall with a similar spread, making it an excellent small ornamental tree or large shrub for tight spaces. The flowers appear along stems and branches in spring, then the foliage provides a polished green canopy through summer, giving you both a standout seasonal moment and a steady structure afterward. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with more sun supporting the strongest flowering. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs best in soils that do not stay wet. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate moisture during dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 6 to 9. Deer: Not reliably deer resistant, so protect young plants if browsing is an issue. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point near an entry, patio, or main garden view where the compact form and spring blooms can be enjoyed up close. Small Space Specimen: Delivers the presence of a flowering tree in tight beds and smaller landscapes. Foundation Accent: Adds spring color and a rounded canopy that softens corners and hard lines. Courtyard Planting: Fits enclosed spaces where scale and a tidy habit matter. Mixed Border Anchor: Provides height and seasonal interest above perennials and low shrubs without crowding. Low Maintenance Care Planting: Choose a sheltered site with good drainage and allow space for the canopy to develop naturally. Mulching: Maintain a mulch ring to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch off the stems. Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to remove dead wood and refine shape, avoiding heavy cuts. Watering: Deep water during the first growing season and during drought to support bloom and leaf quality. Feeding: Use a light, balanced feeding in spring only if growth is weak, since excessive feeding can reduce flowering. Why Choose Don Egolf Chinese Redbud? Compact Habit: Stays small and rounded, making placement easy in residential landscapes. Heavy Bloom: Produces a dense spring flower display for strong early-season color. Polished Look: Neat canopy and clean foliage keep it looking intentional through summer. Versatile Placement: Works as a specimen, foundation accent, or courtyard tree without taking over the space.
