Tomra (Chod Visor)

The tomra is a traditional eye visor used in Chöd and sur-offering practices. It covers the eyes without obstructing vision, allowing the practitioner to remain focused while appearing less threatening to the spirits being summoned. According to tradition, spiritually advanced practitioners emit a subtle radiance from the forehead, which can intimidate certain beings—hence the tomra helps mask that radiance. Symbolism & Meaning In Chöd practice, humility and fearlessness are key. The tomra supports these by shielding the practitioner’s gaze and allowing full engagement with the offering practice. It serves as both a ritual aid and a symbolic gesture of selflessness and equanimity toward all beings.
