Arctic Fire® Red Redosier Dogwood

Every landscape needs a blaze of color in those long, cold days of winter. Now, even if you have a small landscape, you can grow a special variety of Redosier Dogwood. Arctic Fire® Red Redosier Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Farrow') is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection that is a true dwarf version of this beloved native shrub. Pretty white springtime flower clusters develop on last year's stems. They bring butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Try them in cut flower arrangements indoors, adding a branch or two to your bouquet. Attractive, dark green foliage looks great all season long. The white flowers develop into small white berries. You might not see them, as the local songbirds love to eat the berries. They will take just as soon as they ripen. As the leaves turn and fall in autumn, you (and the neighbors!) will start to notice the bright red stems that are left behind. Arctic Fire® Dogwood is a winter gem! The cut stems are highly desirable because of the deep, dark red stem color during the winter dormancy period. Cut stems can be used to great effect in urns and pots outdoors for winter décor and holiday decorations. These classic, natural decorations are always in style. You'll love the look all winter long. Add twinkle lights and exterior decorations for your winter enjoyment as you wish. Because this superior nativar stays smaller than the species, you can use it throughout your landscape. And who doesn't love the amazing bright red young stems peeking up out of a white cap of snow? Enjoy these small shrubs! Planting and Application: Arctic Fire® Dogwood makes a fantastic shorter hedge that flowers, and fruits and gives a wonderful winter show. We recommend keeping it as an informal hedge. It looks best when allowed to grow naturally without shearing. Just give it the room it needs to reach its full spread, and you'll be thrilled with the performance. Arctic Fire is perfect for a privacy screen alongside a patio. It also can be used along the length of your driveway as an excellent snow fence. Plant it against the prevailing winds to catch and hold snow before it drifts across your driveway. Ease your winter shoveling task with these wonderful garden features. This showy Red Redosier Dogwood selection is an outstanding plant to use for naturalizing. Use an odd number in a loose grouping scattered along the edge of a prairie or throughout a woodland garden. Repeat Arctic Fire® along the length of a perennial border for an excellent backdrop. You'll gain wonderful winter interest and structure through the dormant season. The bright red stems look incredible with small evergreen shrubs to hold up your design through the winter. Because it stays compact, you can use Arctic Fire® in foundation plantings under your front windows. It will look so cheery all year long. Use a single plant as an accent at the corner of a garage or porch to soften the angles. This useful deciduous shrub tolerates wetter soils than other shrubs. Use them in low spots that seem to stay wet, near a pond, or as part of a planned Rain Garden. You'll improve the quality of your local groundwater if you allow pretty plants to filter water runoff from roofs and streets before it hits the storm sewer. Try them in your large exterior planters to easily adorn your front entrance or to perk up either side of otherwise bland garage doors. Mix evergreen branches, Holly, or Magnolia with these dark red stems in your containers. They can be planted in full sun or part shade, but you'll get the best color in full sun. They tolerate just about any soil, including areas that stay damp. Try them in those challenging wet areas and watch them thrive. The best way to keep Arctic Fire® colorful is to renewal prune them. In fall, cut the oldest thickest stems right out at the ground level. You'll leave the thinner, younger stems in place. These are the stems that exhibit the best winter display. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system to keep it nice and cool, and keep the foliage clean from mud splashing during rain. Pruning can be done in the fall as your source for cut material. Use the cut stems for your containers and urns for winter decoration. You can also prune anytime during the winter or early spring before the new growth starts. It's easier if you prune when the leaves are off, as you'll be more able to see what you are doing. If you are cutting the stems for winter decoration, remove the two-year-old stems down to the ground in November. Next year, you'll see new shoots coming up from the base which will be a vivid red that following winter.
