DOB

Takashi Murakami - DOB  The work DOB by Takashi Murakami is a small-scale sculpture that embodies one of the most iconic characters in the artist’s visual universe: Mr. DOB, a hybrid and ever-changing figure that synthesizes otaku culture, kawaii aesthetics, and a critique of consumer society. Produced in a limited edition of 1000 copies, the piece measures 8.9 × 7.6 × 5.1 cm and stands out for its compact form and meticulous detailing, inspired by contemporary Japanese craftsmanship. The figure, offered in vibrant color variations, retains the unmistakable round head with large ears, marked with the letters D and B, an abbreviation of “DOB,” the character’s name. Its joyful, almost childlike expression draws from the visual language of manga and commercial mascots, highlighting the subtle ambiguity between playfulness and conceptual depth that characterizes much of Murakami’s work. Dob belongs to the series of Murakami’s three-dimensional pieces, crafted at the Kaikai Kiki Factory, where artisanal techniques blend with industrial processes to create objects that transcend the boundaries between art and design. Through this sculpture, the artist reaffirms his ability to transform pop culture symbols into art objects with a strong visual identity, offering a work that is both accessible and deeply rooted in contemporary Japanese aesthetics.
