Diplomático Ambassador Selection Cask Strength Rum 750ml

Diplomático's story begins with Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, who traveled and researched multiple rum-producing regions and their distinct production methods before landing on the formula that became "Ron Diplomático" — first produced, by most accounts, sometime in the 1890s. The brand's name and identity draw directly on Venezuela's own history: 19th-century Venezuelan noblemen renowned for their discernment and diplomacy, with the Don Juancho icon itself inspired by the "Mantuanos" — the true diplomats of that era. Today, Diplomático is produced by Destilerías Unidas S.A. (DUSA), based at the foot of Venezuela's Andes Mountains, a location chosen both for its access to the region's purest mountain water and its proximity to the area's major sugar processing plants. Since 2002, the company has operated as a fully independent, privately-owned Venezuelan family business, controlling the entire production process from field to bottle. Ambassador Selection is the house's ultra-premium expression, crafted from the distillery's finest reserves and released in genuinely limited quantities. The rum ages a minimum of 12 years in white oak (ex-bourbon) casks before an additional two years of secondary maturation in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks — a finishing period that adds real dried-fruit richness and rounded sweetness to the already well-developed base spirit. Unlike many commercial rums, Ambassador contains no added sweeteners, caramel coloring, or other additives, meaning it requires no chill filtration and is bottled directly at natural cask strength — 47% ABV, considerably higher than most standard rum releases, specifically to preserve the full intensity and mouthfeel the extended aging has built. The results have earned genuine international recognition: a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The official tasting notes describe bright, dark amber color, with aromas reminiscent of port wine, cigar, and dried fruits, joined by chocolate. On the palate: raisin, nutmeg, and toasted oak, leading into a long, pleasing aftertaste — well-balanced and complex, developing into a long, warm, rolling finish. One RumRatings community member, tasting it directly against Diplomático's more familiar core lineup, found "the Diplomatico lineage is still obvious" — "the nose is thick, with full, soft, oaky notes, a bit of chocolate, flambéed banana, and heavy caramel," noting that despite the 94-proof strength, "you don't sense any alcohol... it's very well balanced and smooth." Best enjoyed neat, slowly, to fully appreciate the depth this extended dual-cask aging has built. Origins & Craftsmanship Ron Diplomático traces its origins to the work of Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, who researched several different rum-producing regions and studied their distinct production methods before arriving at the formula behind "Ron Diplomático" — first produced in Venezuela sometime in the 1890s. The brand's name and iconography draw on Venezuela's 19th-century noble class, renowned for their discernment and diplomacy, with the Don Juancho figure himself inspired by the "Mantuanos," the true diplomats of that era. Production is carried out by Destilerías Unidas S.A. (DUSA), based at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela, a site chosen both for its access to pristine mountain water and its proximity to the region's major sugar processing operations. In 2002, the company was sold to a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs and became a fully independent, 100% privately-owned Venezuelan family business, controlling the entire production chain from field to bottle. Diplomático works with up to ten different sugar cane varieties, most commonly Romana, Venezuela, and Canal Point, and maintains a stated commitment to sustainable production practices, supporting Fundacaña Venezuela and the local farming community. Ambassador Selection is crafted from the distillery's finest reserves in genuinely limited annual quantities. The rum is distilled in copper pot stills and batch kettle stills for added complexity, then aged a minimum of 12 years in ex-bourbon white oak barrels, developing structure, oak influence, and natural sweetness. Following primary maturation, the rum undergoes a secondary aging period of approximately two years in first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, adding layered complexity and rounded, dried-fruit sweetness. The finished rum contains no added sweeteners, caramel, or other additives, and requires no chill filtration as a result — it is bottled directly at natural cask strength, 47% ABV / 94 proof, to preserve its full intensity and mouthfeel. Imported into the United States by Brown-Forman, Louisville, Kentucky. Critics Reviews Gold Medal — International Spirits Challenge Double Gold — San Francisco World Spirits Competition Wine Enthusiast 96 Points: "Rich and concentrated, this is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years, then aged an additional two years in former PX Sherry casks. The end result is luxurious, thick in caramel, toffee and gingerbread flavors that finish long and elegant, with clove, allspice, dry cocoa, leather and orange peel accents. It sips beautifully."  Diplomático / official tasting notes: "Bright, dark amber. Notes of port wine, cigar, dried fruits and chocolate. Raisin, nutmeg, and toasted oak notes leading into a long pleasing aftertaste. Well balanced and complex profile that develops into a long, warm, and rolling finish." Vault of Spirits (extended tasting note): "Nose: Rich aromas of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, vanilla, and dried fruits with hints of tobacco and oak spice. Finish: Long, warm and satisfying with persistent notes of oak, dark chocolate, tobacco, and dried fruits that linger elegantly." RumRatings community (extended independent review): "That said, the Diplomatico lineage is still obvious. The nose is thick, with full, soft, oaky notes, a bit of chocolate, flambéed banana and heavy caramel. The first sip surprises a bit... Diplomático Ambassador Selection comes in a high class bottle and a high class package. Very classy. This rum has to rest in the glass so all of the nice aromas will come out. You smell sweetness, fruit and chocolate. This rum is 47% proof but you don't sense that in the smell or in the taste. The taste is mild with sweetness, vanilla and a hint of spice and sherry. You don't sense any alcohol. It's very well balanced and smooth." Tasting Profile Nose Bright, dark amber. Port wine, cigar, and dried fruits lead, joined by dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and vanilla. Tobacco and oak spice add depth, alongside soft, full oaky notes, flambéed banana, and heavy caramel. Palate Raisin, nutmeg, and toasted oak carry the entry, mild in sweetness despite the elevated proof — vanilla, spice, and sherry-derived richness from the Pedro Ximénez finish come through clearly, with genuinely well-balanced, smooth structure. No alcohol heat is apparent despite the natural 94-proof strength. Finish Long, warm, and rolling, closing with persistent notes of oak, dark chocolate, tobacco, and dried fruit that linger elegantly. A pleasing, extended aftertaste that reflects the full 14 years of combined aging across two distinct cask types.
