Dimorphorchis lowii

Introducing the Dimorphorchis lowii, a botanical marvel hailing from the lush landscapes of Borneo. This orchid, with its unique feature of two distinct flower colors on the same spike, is a rare gem that will captivate any orchid enthusiast. Imagine the breathtaking sight of the first few flowers, resplendent in bright yellow with mesmerizing red dots, emanating a strong, delightful fragrance. As the inflorescence unfolds, it reveals additional blooms in a pale yellow hue adorned with larger, more blotchy red spots, creating a visual spectacle that is nothing short of extraordinary. Cultivating tips to help you unlock its full potential: Light and Environment: Place your orchid in bright light, avoiding direct sunlight. Mimic its natural habitat with a humidity level around 80% and ensure good airflow to keep the plant thriving. Temperature Range: Maintain a temperature between 70 – 86°F, providing the warmth this tropical orchid craves. This temperature range, coupled with high humidity, creates an ideal environment for robust growth and prolific blooming. Growth Habit: This vandaceous orchid is best grown hanging, allowing the inflorescence to gracefully dangle, much like its relative, the vanda. The flexible spike can reach up to 12 feet, showcasing the plant's elegance and uniqueness. Floral Dimorphism: The Dimorphorchis lowii earns its name from the Greek words meaning "twice" and "form or shape." The two types of flowers, distinguished by color, size, and fragrance, present a botanical mystery. The fragrant, yellow flowers at the base may serve as a lure for pollinators, while the paler, non-fragrant ones attract nocturnal visitors. This intricate dance of nature adds an extra layer of fascination to this already exceptional orchid. As a native of Borneo, it thrives in low hill, wet, tropical forests. Care Guidelines: Keep the plant in an intermediate-warm temperature range. Provide medium-bright filtered light, mimicking its natural habitat. Maintain high humidity levels (60%–80%) for optimal growth. Water regularly, keeping the orchid moist but allowing slight drying between watering. Fertilize consistently, 1 – 2 times a week from Spring to Fall, to support healthy growth. Ensure medium air circulation to prevent any stagnation.
