Glutathione, often called the body’s “master antioxidant,” is a critical molecule involved in protecting cells from oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals. It plays a central role in the liver’s phase II detoxification pathways, conjugating with heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium to facilitate their safe elimination from the body [1]. Recent studies emphasize glutathione’s pivotal function in cellular defense mechanisms and detoxification processes, reinforcing its foundational role in supporting heavy metal clearance and protecting organs from toxicity (Wu et al., 2022). Olive leaf extract contains potent polyphenolic compounds, notably oleuropein, that exhibit significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds protect liver cells from oxidative damage and enhance detoxification enzyme activity, which helps mitigate the effects of environmental toxins [2]. A 2025 study found that olive leaf extract supplementation improved markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, highlighting its ability to bolster the body’s natural detoxification defenses and support cellular repair (Lockyer et al., 2025). Selenium is an essential trace mineral that acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, a key enzyme that neutralizes harmful peroxides and supports the body’s antioxidant defense system. This mineral’s role is particularly important in counteracting oxidative stress induced by heavy metal exposure. Research from 2020 demonstrates selenium’s capacity to reduce accumulation and toxicity of heavy metals by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity, making it a crucial nutrient in comprehensive detox protocols [3] (Feng et al., 2020). Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a metabolite in the Krebs cycle that supports cellular energy metabolism and aids the elimination of nitrogenous waste such as ammonia. This metabolite has been shown to improve mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress, thereby enhancing the efficiency of cellular detoxification processes [4]. Recent investigations have also indicated AKG’s potential to support tissue repair and reduce toxin-induced cellular damage, making it a valuable addition to detoxification formulas (Iqbal et al., 2021). Inositol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, contributes to liver health by supporting lipid metabolism and promoting cellular signaling pathways important for detoxification and regeneration. Studies published in 2024 reveal that inositol supplementation helps ameliorate abnormal liver fat metabolism and supports hepatic cellular repair mechanisms, making it a vital ingredient to round out the detoxification process [5] (Zhang et al., 2024).
