Derekh HaSpirala

Are the differences between men and women essential? Is equality a Jewish value? Should the sex I was born with define my purpose and influence how I act in the world? And what does it mean to be a man or a woman in an era where we are no longer told who should earn a living and who should cook, who changes diapers and who changes tires? It seems that the religious world is divided into two approaches: “Equal but different” or “Judaism is patriarchal and must change.” Derekh HaSpirala rises above both of these positions. It offers a bold new perspective on the dynamic between masculine and feminine forces in the world and the way they are reflected in every layer of life – from romantic relationships to the relationship between a person and God. With fluent, compelling, and honest writing, Miriam Kosman develops a Jewish-philosophical framework that presents fascinating insights about men and women, offering a contemporary response to the question of gender and Judaism. In addition to its philosophical exploration of masculinity and femininity, the book also presents supra-human insights and tools for understanding ourselves and improving our relationships with those around us. Jewish thought, halacha (Jewish law), Kabbalah, academic research, and personal stories are interwoven throughout this groundbreaking book, which presents the spiral model as a way of life. In an era where traditional and modern poles often clash, Derekh HaSpirala provides a key to a new Jewish understanding of femininity and masculinity, with the power to create meaningful change in our lives.
