Ingredient Mechanisms of Action Scientific literature shows that the individual probiotics and added ingredients in Dentalflora™ have multiple activities. Below are highlights that may account for the outcomes seen in a clinical setting. Promotes healthy salivary production – Encourages saliva production and flow, which provides lubrication to the gums and teeth, minimizes bad breath, and can help protect enamel and support healthy teeth and gums. Saliva also has a stable pH of 6.5–7, the favorable pH for most species of beneficial bacteria. It keeps the bacteria hydrated and serves as a medium for transporting nutrients to microorganisms. Helps to freshen breath – Promoting a healthy microbial environment in the mouth with beneficial probiotics aids in minimizing the production of compounds that contribute to bad breath. Spearmint contains volatile essential oils with a refreshing aroma, which helps freshen the breath. In research studies, individual probiotic strains have been associated with improvements in bad breath. Disrupts dental plaque biofilms – Dental plaque is a type of biofilm that can lead to poor oral health, contributing to dental caries, halitosis, and possible gum issues. Xylitol has been shown to interfere with biofilm and plaque formation, as have S. salivarius M18 (BLIS M18®), L. reuteri, and L. salivarius. Supports healthy inflammatory response – All four probiotics and xylitol have been shown to encourage a healthy balance of inflammation in the oral cavity, which can benefit gingival tissues and improve oral health overall. Modulates microbial balance – While bacteria are the major drivers in the development of dental caries and gum issues, fungi can also contribute to poor oral health. All four probiotics in the formula have been shown to modify the oral microbial environment, regardless of the offending bug, which may reduce the chances of developing oral health concerns. Minimizes dental caries risk – Xylitol may reduce the risk of dental caries. Research has shown that S. salivarius M18 (BLIS M18®), L. reuteri, and L. salivarius disrupt plaque formation and modify the oral microbiome, activities that support healthy teeth. Encourages remineralization – Remineralization helps to strengthen the enamel of teeth to reduce the likelihood of damage from chewing and protect from decay. Xylitol has been shown to support remineralization of the teeth, thereby reducing the risk of tooth decay.
