Dendrobium lichenastrum

Dendrobium lichenastrum is a compact yet hardy orchid native to northeastern Australia, where it thrives as both an epiphyte and a lithophyte. Found from sea level up to 1200 meters, this species flourishes on the outer branches of the rainforest canopy, where it enjoys high light and seasonal dry spells. This miniature Dendrobium features branching rhizomes that produce closely spaced, succulent, cylindrical pseudobulbs. From the base of these pseudobulbs emerge charming yellow flowers adorned with maroon to dark orange stripes. On a mature plant, blooms appear sporadically throughout the year, adding to its allure. Despite its small size, D. lichenastrum is a surprisingly vigorous and fast-growing orchid once established—a true testament to its adaptability. Cultivation Tips 🌞 Light Requirements This species thrives in bright, indirect to direct light, similar to conditions found in the upper rainforest canopy. A high-light environment encourages healthy growth and flowering. 🌡 Temperature & Humidity Dendrobium lichenastrum is highly adaptable to a range of temperatures: Warm to cool conditions (ideal for intermediate growers). Humidity should be kept moderate, though the plant tolerates drier conditions well. 💦 Watering & Drying Period This species prefers to dry quickly after watering. Water regularly during the growing season but allow the roots to dry between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly for 4-5 months to mimic its natural habitat, where it experiences less rainfall. 🌱 Mounting & Potting Best grown mounted on cork, tree fern, or hardwood to replicate its epiphytic nature. Alternatively, use a shallow pot with a free-draining mix (bark, perlite, and charcoal). 🌿 Fertilizing Feed lightly during the active growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or suspend fertilizing in winter when the plant experiences its natural dry rest. ⏳ Flowering & Fragrance Blooms appear in late winter to early spring, with a single musky-scented flower emerging from short, axillary inflorescences. On mature plants, flowers can appear intermittently year-round. This is a blooming size bareroot imported division (about 6 bulbs), newly potted in a 2" pot, about 1 to 2 years blooms, grown from seed, limited! Perfect for those who enjoy tough, drought-resistant orchids, this miniature Dendrobium is an excellent choice for growers seeking a low-maintenance yet rewarding species. Whether mounted or in a shallow pot, its resilience, charming flowers, and unique growth habit make it a standout addition to any orchid collection.
