Dendritic opal is a variety of opal known for its distinctive dendritic or tree-like inclusions. It is found in various locations, including Australia, Mexico, and the United States. The formation of dendritic opal involves the infiltration of mineral-rich water into rock cavities, where silica deposits form over time. This process gives rise to the unique branching patterns within the opal. The mineral exhibits a hardness ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and typically occurs in translucent to opaque formations. Dendritic opal is often cut en cabochon to showcase its intricate inclusions, creating visually appealing patterns that enhance its ornamental value.
