The Exorcist (Demonic Face/Captain Howdy)

The Exorcist — 1973 Few images in horror are as instantly unsettling as the demonic face from The Exorcist—a fleeting, nightmarish vision that burned itself into the minds of audiences when the film was released in 1973. Directed by William Friedkin, the film redefined horror with its raw intensity and psychological dread. Based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist follows the terrifying possession of young Regan and the desperate attempt to save her. But beyond the story, it’s the imagery that made the film legendary—especially the subliminal flashes of the pale, hollow-eyed demon, often referred to as Captain Howdy, whose distorted face appears like a waking nightmare. That face—gaunt, shadowed, and inhuman—became one of the most chilling visuals in cinema history. Used sparingly in the film, it was all the more effective, leaving audiences with a lingering sense of unease long after the credits rolled.
