Quick Facts: ABV: 35% (70 Proof)  |  Origin: Austin, Texas, USA  |  Style: Flavored Vodka  |  Distillery: Deep Eddy Distilling Co. Production & Heritage Deep Eddy Distilling Co. operates out of Austin, Texas, and takes its name from a historic swimming hole in the city. Ruby Red starts as a corn-based spirit distilled ten times through a state-of-the-art column still using south Texas corn and Texas spring water, then charcoal-filtered for a clean base. What separates it from most flavored vodkas is the finishing step: real ruby red grapefruit juice is blended into the distillate and lightly sweetened with pure cane sugar, giving it a natural pink hue and authentic citrus flavor rather than an artificial one. Tasting Notes Aroma: Immediate, vivid ruby red grapefruit dominates the nose, recalling fresh grapefruit soda. Underneath the bright citrus sits a faint sweetness and a subtle grain-neutral softness from the corn base. Taste: The palate opens with a juicy rush of grapefruit—tart, slightly tangy, and unmistakably real fruit rather than candy-like. Mid-palate, cane sugar sweetness balances the citrus acidity without cloying. A faint savory, almost mushroomy quality emerges on the back end, adding an unexpected layer of complexity for a flavored vodka. Finish: Medium-short and clean, with lingering grapefruit pith bitterness that keeps it refreshing. The corn-distilled base ensures no harsh burn, just a smooth fade. How to Drink Ruby Red Ruby Red shines over ice with a splash of soda water, letting the natural grapefruit flavor speak for itself. It also works well as a cocktail foundation in these serves: Greyhound: The obvious match—Ruby Red replaces both plain vodka and the grapefruit juice, simplifying the build while intensifying fruit flavor. Paloma-style Highball: Mix with lime juice and grapefruit soda for a vodka riff on the tequila classic; the cane sugar sweetness bridges the two citrus elements. Ruby Red Mule: Substitute it into a Moscow Mule; the grapefruit tartness pairs naturally with ginger beer and fresh lime. How does Ruby Red compare to Tito's Handmade Vodka? Tito's is an unflavored, 40% ABV pot-distilled vodka designed for versatility, while Ruby Red is a lighter, 35% ABV flavored expression built around real grapefruit juice. Consumers often keep both on hand—Tito's as a neutral mixer and Ruby Red as a ready-to-go citrus option. Is Ruby Red good for cocktails? What foods pair well with Ruby Red? Grilled shrimp benefits from the grapefruit's acidity cutting through richness. Fresh ceviche mirrors its citrus brightness. Goat cheese salads complement the tart-sweet balance. Spicy Thai dishes are tempered by the cane sugar sweetness. Key lime pie echoes the citrus profile as a dessert pairing. Its 90-point Tastings.com score reinforces that the quality-to-cost ratio is strong. Why Ruby Red? The defining advantage of Deep Eddy Ruby Red is its ingredient transparency: real ruby red grapefruit juice and pure cane sugar replace the artificial flavorings and high-fructose sweeteners common in this category. Ten passes through a column still and charcoal filtration produce a notably clean corn-based spirit that doesn't compete with the fruit. The 90-point score from Tastings.com confirms what the flavor profile suggests—this is a flavored vodka built on substance rather than marketing. In a crowded field of grapefruit vodkas, Ruby Red remains one of the few that tastes like actual grapefruit.
