DBT Problem Solving Worksheet

When faced with a challenging situation or life problem that triggers painful emotions, problem solving becomes a necessary skill in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Problem solving often involves seven steps, which include identifying and defining the problem, gathering information or checking the facts, and setting an achievable goal for the desired outcome. The DBT Problem Solving worksheet includes questions and suggestions for the problem solving steps, and clients can reflect on their answers. As they go through each step of the worksheet, they can brainstorm as many strategies as they can to address the current situation or a future challenge. Filling out this worksheet can help kids and teens gain more clarity on problem solving, which helps them feel empowered and less overwhelmed. As your child, student, or therapy client works through the problem solving process, remember to offer encouragement. Let them complete the activity in a calm environment where they’ll feel more at ease expressing themselves.
