Dark Sun & Moon African Carved Panel

This 54-inch door is a single-slab Igbo piece from Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, carved from one solid monolithic plank rather than joined boards, sometimes attributed to the Awka carving tradition. Two registers of paired concentric target-ring motifs, a solar-eye form recognizable in Igbo carving, anchor the top and bottom of the door, while a central band carries a rhythmic row of horizontal lens-shaped eye forms framed by scalloped crescent borders. The surface carries a deep, saturated espresso-brown patina with visible oil staining consistent with long domestic or compound use. At 19 inches wide and 54 inches tall, this is a narrow single-slab form, likely built for a compound gate or storage-room entrance rather than a main house door, and it reads well today as a freestanding sculptural panel. The dense, repeating geometry across all three registers gives it real presence at a smaller footprint, suited to a narrow wall run, beside a doorway, or anywhere a full-width door wouldn't fit. *Origin: Igbo tradition, Anambra State, Southeastern Nigeria (Awka-region style) *Era: Early 20th century *Material: Hand-carved solid hardwood, single monolithic slab *Finish: Deep espresso-brown patina with visible oil staining, age-consistent *Dimensions: 19"W x 1"D x 54"H *Condition: Genuine antique wear, structurally stable, single-slab construction intact An antique single-slab Igbo door from southeastern Nigeria, carved with paired concentric solar-eye rings top and bottom and a central band of lens-shaped eye forms, deep espresso patina with visible oil staining. Q: How can you tell a door like this is a genuine single-slab antique and not a reproduction? A: The construction is the clearest tell, this is carved from one solid monolithic piece of wood rather than boards joined together, which is harder to fake convincingly and typically points to an older working tradition. The saturated, uneven patina and visible oil staining built up over years of handling also aren't something reproductions replicate well, they tend to look flat or artificially aged instead. We stay cautious about more specific ceremonial claims, like exactly how staining occurred, since that kind of detail isn't verifiable from the object itself, but the construction and wear are honest physical evidence of age.
