a Dark, a Light, a Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes

Celebrate the legacy of a textile design pioneer with "A Dark, a Light, a Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes". Recognized as "the greatest modern weaver and the mother of the twentieth-century palette", Dorothy Liebes (1897-1972) revolutionized textile design with her innovative use of materials, textures, and vibrant colors. This meticulously researched book offers an in-depth look into Liebes's prolific career and her enduring influence on modern design. Despite her collaborations with iconic figures like Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Dreyfuss, and Edward Durrell Stone, Liebes's contributions have often been overshadowed. Her richly colored and textured works were not fully captured in the black-and-white photography of her time, contributing to her lesser-known status today. "a Dark, a Light, a Bright" aims to restore her place in the pantheon of modern textile designers, alongside luminaries such as Anni Albers and Florence Knoll. The book features full-color, accurate reproductions of Liebes's works, providing readers with a visual feast of her unique "Liebes Look". Essays explore key milestones in her career, including her collaborations with leading interior designers and architects, her experimental design studio, and her innovative use of fabrics to enhance interior lighting. Additionally, the book delves into her work with fashion designers like Clare Potter and Bonnie Cashin, highlighting her versatility and creative vision. Beautifully designed by Estudio Herrera, "a Dark, a Light, a Bright" offers a tactile experience that echoes Liebes's craft. The real cloth cover with silkscreened typography and inset photograph opens to reveal an exposed spine and colored threads that tie together the page signatures. This exquisite design not only pays homage to Liebes's artistry but also provides a sensory connection to her work.
