Hakuro Nishiki Dappled Willow

Dappled Willow (Salix integra 'Hakuro Nishiki')Dappled Willow brings a fresh, bright look to the landscape with new growth that blushes pink and foliage that settles into a lively mix of white and green. It grows quickly, helping beds and borders feel finished sooner, and it can also be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning. The colorful leaves and stems add interest beyond the growing season, especially when planted where winter views matter. Use it when you want a fast, adaptable shrub that adds light, movement, and contrast without complicated care. Distinctive FeaturesThis deciduous willow is grown for its tricolor effect, with spring growth often showing pink tones before maturing to white and green variegation through summer. Stems can show reddish to pink coloration, adding off-season interest, especially after leaf drop. It naturally forms a multi-stem shrub with an upright to rounded habit, and it responds strongly to pruning that encourages fresh, colorful shoots. Small catkins may appear in spring, but foliage and stem color are the main highlights. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with full sun promoting the best color and light afternoon shade helping in hotter summers. Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil is ideal, and it tolerates heavier soils if drainage is reasonable. Water: Prefers consistent moisture, water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Grows well in zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 6 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, and can be kept smaller with pruning. Habit: Multi-stem shrub with an upright to rounded form and dense branching when pruned. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use the pink spring flush and bright variegation as a focal point where it can lift the look of an entire bed. Screening: Plant as a fast, soft screen along a back border or property line with room for its natural width. Mixed Borders: Pair with evergreens or dark foliage plants to sharpen contrast and add depth. Moist Areas: Use in consistently moist spots, including near downspouts or low areas with improved drainage. Cut Stems: Grow where you can harvest colorful stems for arrangements and seasonal decor. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to shape and to promote vigorous new growth with the best color. Renewal Cuts: Cut back hard every year or two if needed to refresh foliage color and keep the plant compact. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the first growing season, then water deeply during drought to reduce stress. Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch a few inches away from stems. Reversion: Remove any all-green shoots promptly to maintain the best variegated look. Why Choose Dappled Willow? Season-Long Brightness: White and green variegation keeps borders looking lighter and more finished. Spring Color Lift: Pink new growth provides an early-season highlight that stands out from typical shrubs. Fast Results: Quick growth helps add structure and screening sooner than many shrubs. Pruning Friendly: Strong response to pruning makes it easy to control size and encourage fresh color. Moist Site Option: Handles consistently moist soils better than many common landscape shrubs. Dappled Willow is a practical choice for bright color, quick structure, and a more designed look in everyday plantings. Give it sun, steady moisture, and a simple annual prune, and it will stay dense and colorful year after year. Plant it where its spring flush and clean variegation can be seen often, and let it do the work of lifting the whole border.
