Key Features of the Damascus Pipe Tomahawk Design Features Damascus-pattern steel head with a striking etched design Solid hardwood handle with smooth grip finish Hand-forged head showcasing traditional craftsmanship Full-size decorative tomahawk for display or gifting The Blade The head is forged from 200 layers of high carbon Damascus steel, acid-etched to bring out the swirling wave pattern that forms during the folding process. No two heads read the same. The layers run deep into the steel, not painted on, not printed. The edge is ground to a working sharpness with a hardness rating of 55 to 58 HRC: hard enough to hold a keen edge, tough enough to resist chipping under impact. The Handle The handle is solid hardwood, shaped for a full hand grip and finished smooth. It seats firm in bare hands and sits steady with gloves on. The grain is tight and the wood is dense. It does not flex under load. The color is warm and dark, which sits well against the silver-grey of the etched Damascus head. The Build The head is mounted on a through-hole fit with the handle, traditional to pipe tomahawk construction. The balance point sits close to the head, giving it a forward lean that feels deliberate in the hand. The overall weight is solid without being heavy. Every piece is hand-forged by a single artisan, which means the fit between head and handle is set by hand and checked by eye, not stamped by a machine. FAQs What steel is this pipe tomahawk made from? This Damascus pipe tomahawk is made from 200 layers of high carbon steel folded and welded by hand. The steel reaches a hardness of 55 to 58 HRC, which holds a sharp edge and resists breaking. The acid-etched surface reveals the wave pattern created during the layering process. No two pieces look the same. Is this pipe tomahawk good for display? Yes. This piece is built for display first. The 200-layer Damascus pattern and hardwood handle make it a strong visual anchor for Viking or medieval decor. It stands or mounts on a wall without modification. If you need a working tomahawk for chopping or throwing, JW SteelCrafts also makes functional forged axes. Does it come with a sheath? A sheath is not currently shown in the product listing. Contact JW SteelCrafts directly to confirm what is included in the box. For display use, a wall mount bracket or stand works well as an alternative to a sheath. Is it legal to own a Damascus tomahawk in the USA? Yes. Damascus tomahawks and axes are legal to own in all 50 US states for adults. No permit is required to collect or display one. Laws around carry or transport vary by state and city. Always check your local ordinances if you plan to transport the axe. How do I sharpen a Damascus axe? Use a medium-grit whetstone or ceramic rod. Keep the blade at the factory bevel angle and stroke from heel to tip in smooth, even passes. Finish with a fine-grit stone or leather strop. Never use a rotary grinder or belt sander: the heat destroys the temper and damages the Damascus pattern permanently. Can I customize this tomahawk? Yes. JW SteelCrafts accepts custom orders. You can request a specific handle material from the available options: rosewood, stag, bone, pakka wood, resin, or olive wood. Custom engraving and personalized finishing are available on request. Contact JW SteelCrafts directly through the website to discuss your order. How long will a hand forged Damascus axe last? Indefinitely, with basic care. Damascus carbon steel does not degrade if kept dry and oiled. The hardwood handle can last decades when conditioned regularly. Many collectors own JW SteelCrafts pieces for 10 or more years without any restoration needed. This is a piece you can pass down. Is this a good gift? Yes. This pipe tomahawk is one of the most distinctive gifts in the JW SteelCrafts lineup. It works for Father's Day, Christmas, a retirement, groomsmen, or any occasion where the recipient collects weapons, appreciates craftsmanship, or has a Viking or Norse interest. It arrives ready to display with no extra wrapping needed.
