Dall Sheep Management in Alaska from Pleistocene to Present

When striking population declines happen, wildlife managers and their public partners  instinctively move to "fix it", most commonly by moving to curtail hunting.  Heimer argues that today's full-curl harvest limits were built from "the biology up" to help up keeps our heads when push comes to shove. In our current contentious moment, Heimer's history aims to allay anxieties these declines always produce. His review of human interactions with Dall sheep from the ice ages in Alaska to the present summarizes what biologists think they know. Dall Sheep Management in Alaska from Pleistocene to Present records the history of how a better understanding of sheep biology improved sheep management in Alaska, charting the "rough and tumble" events that came from challenging older, entrenched ideas. This book is for anyone interested in Dall sheep, management history and change, or a good story with a wealth of personal asides.
