Medaka Ricefish

Medaka Ricefish (Oryzias latipes) The Medaka Ricefish is a peaceful and remarkably hardy freshwater fish admired for its elegant appearance, shimmering metallic coloration, and fascinating behavior. Available in a variety of beautiful strains—including Platinum, Gold, Orange, White, Blue, and Miyuki—Medaka Ricefish have become increasingly popular among aquarists and pond keepers alike. Their adaptability, peaceful temperament, and ability to thrive in a wide range of temperatures make them an excellent choice for community aquariums, nano tanks, and outdoor ponds. Native to Japan, Korea, and parts of eastern China, Medaka Ricefish naturally inhabit rice paddies, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams. They are highly social fish that thrive when kept in groups of at least six individuals. In the aquarium, they appreciate densely planted areas for security along with open swimming space. Their graceful schooling behavior and constant activity make them a beautiful addition to planted aquascapes. Medaka Ricefish are omnivores and eagerly accept high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet enhances their coloration, supports breeding, and promotes overall health. Their exceptionally peaceful nature makes them ideal companions for shrimp, snails, Corydoras, small rasboras, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and other gentle community fish. They are also one of the few ornamental fish that can comfortably tolerate cooler water temperatures, making them well suited for both indoor aquariums and outdoor ponds in many climates.
