For outdoor planting, it should be done in the fall, ideally 2-4 weeks before the first hard frost. Daffodils need 12-18 weeks of cool temperatures to bloom in the spring. Plant the bulbs 4-6 inches deep in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Spacing should be about 6 inches apart to allow for adequate growth and air circulation. These daffodils prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates where some afternoon shade can help extend the blooming period. This daffodil blooms in mid-spring, showcasing bright yellow petals with a large, contrasting orange cup. While deadheading is not necessary, removing spent flowers can help direct the plant’s energy back to the bulb for next year’s growth. To improve perennial blooming power, allow the foliage to die back naturally after blooming; this process helps replenish the bulb’s nutrients. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the fall and early spring can support robust growth and blooming. Ensuring the best health from year to year involves proper planting depth, adequate spacing, and maintaining well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to bulb rot. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Regularly check for pests like the narcissus bulb fly, slugs, and snails, and take appropriate action if infestations occur. Optionally, apply a light fertilizer in early spring when the greens just start to poke through. Once the foliage has died back in summer, cut them back and wait for next year’s show.
